CELEBRATING OUR NATIONAL FLOWER, “THE ROSE!”

The American Rose Society has proclaimed the month of June as Library and Rose Month.

The Mother Lode Rose Society has invited the Amador County Library at 530 Sutter Street, Jackson, CA to participate in the National program to promote rose growing and to offer educational materials in the advancement of knowledge of the beauty of our National Flower, “The Rose.”

The Mother Lode Rose Society will present a month long display of educational materials, membership pamphlets, the History of the Rose and of our local society during the month of June in the Library in Jackson. The public will enjoy the beauty of fresh rose and dried arrangements.

This is our invitation to the public and community in an effort to make them aware of the advantages of belonging to the American Rose Society. Kathy Pifari, Mother Lode Rose Society Consulting Rosarian Coordinator will be available on June 22^nd at 2:00 P.M. to answer questions and give some history of the rose. The Local Rose Society has enrolled the Amador Library as a member of the American Rose Society.

The Library will receive a beautiful and educational full color, bi-monthly, 84 page magazines, along with a 130 page American Rose Annual (December publication) full of rose horticulture articles and rose related topics, with exceptional quality photos of roses and rose gardens; with this subscription the Library will also receive a reference book, Modern roses 12.

The Mother Lode Rose Society is proud is to be an active participant in this educational advancement and exposure to what is new in the Rose World. The local society has the responsibility of maintaining the Rose Garden at the Amador Senior Center. We rosarians are a fun and rose loving group who support the community when asked as well as caring for the garden. We welcome all novices who love roses but are afraid of the challenge of raising any.

Please join The Motherlode Rose Society on the first Tuesday of every month at 1:30 PM. at the Amador Senior Center 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson for a fun and illuminating experience. We do not meet in July or August. Our first meeting for the new year will be in September 2010 with a Dynamic speaker, Jolene Adams, American Rose Society Vice President who will give us the insight on the why’s and why not’s of Chemical Safety. The meetings are free to the public.

Please stop by the Library and enjoy the floral displays, information, and educational pamphlets during the month of June 2010.

JUNE IS ROSE MONTH AT THE AMADOR COUNTY LIBRARY

The Mother Lode Rose Society is providing the Amador County Library in Jackson with The American Rose. bi-monthly publication and the Modern Rose 12. book. We will have a rose display in the cabinet at the library for the entire month of June. On June 22nd, Kathy Pifari will speak at the library on Roses at 2 PM. It is our goal to reach out to the community through speaking engagements such as this to better inform people on rose culture. Come visit the library thoughout the month of June.

MLRS Announces Rose and Arrangement Show

“Let Heaven and Nature Sing” is the theme of the Annual Rose and Arrangement Show

being presented by the Mother Lode Rose Society on June 5, 2010 at the Amador Senior Center 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson.

Don’t miss this array of cut roses on display by exhibitors and novice rose lovers who want to share their love for the rose.

The variety of cut roses on display will be Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Miniatures, Climbers, Old Garden Roses, Grandifloras, shrub roses and much more.

The visitors will get to see what the roses actually look like when they decide to expand their own gardens.

Creative Rose Arrangements with titles such as “Saints Go Marching On”, a design using 3 or more separate containers is displayed as a unified whole.

“Fly Away With Me” created as a free moving design using a frame or other suspension. Other interesting titles are “Underwater Ballet”an underwater arrangement and “Sands of Time” using weathered wood. “On Angel’s Wing” is in the dried arrangement category.

Please mark your calendars for this June 5^th exposure to beauty and creativity using our National Flower,”The Rose”.

Doors are open to the Public on Saturday June 5^th from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M.

MOTHER LODE ROSE SOCIETY

The Mother Lode Rose Society is excitedly looking forward to and preparing for their annual Rose and Arrangement Show on June 5, 2010 (1:00 - 4 PM) at the Amador Senior Center.
In preparation for this extravaganza of cut roses and arrangements, Dorothy Wall, President and winner of many awards will present a program of ”The A.B.C’s Of Showing Roses” at their regular meeting on Tuesday May 4 @ 1:30 at the Amador Senior Center 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson.
The Public is invited to get a head start on the simple way of preparing for a Rose Show.
Please bring your favorite rose if you have any for critiquing.

Rose Garden in April Tips by Kathy Pifari

1. Finish all pruning and cleaning around roses.

2. Mulch your rose beds with 2-3. of good organic mulch.

3. Add a handful of time release (18-6-12), a small handful of fast acting fertilizer (16-16-16), a cup of organic fertilizer (like Dr. Earth) and Alfalfa pellets - let the rains help to activate it.

4. Mid-to late March start using water soluble fertilizers and fish emulsion or kelp.

5. Check your irrigation system now so that when the rains stop it will be in good working order.

6. Watch for aphids and wash them off with water.

7. Watch for fungal disease, follow direction on the chemicals you use.

8. Check to see that your tetanus shot is up to date.

9. Move any roses that are in the wrong place. now while the ground is workable and still moist and before the new shoots shoot out too far.

If you are tempted to purchase any more roses be careful when purchasing the bare root roses that are left on many big box store shelves. They have dried out and will probably not do well for you (especially the ones with wax on the canes). It‘s easy to tell yourself you can save it but usually it‘s a waste of your time and money. Stick to the potted roses and

check them carefully for disease before purchasing.

Flower Arrangement Program, April 6th, 2010

The Mother Lode Society is hosting a flower arrangement program on April 6 @1:30 P.M. at the Amador Senior Center 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson. Betty Ann Cassina is an accredited arrangement judge and is currently the Northern California Nevada Hawaii District Chairperson of Arrangement Judges. She belongs to several flower arranging groups and is the winner of many awards. She likes to work with materials available in her own yard.

Please bring a favorite vase that you would like to use at home and any greenery or flowers that you may have in your garden as well as your clippers. Ms. Cassina will bring some extra containers and oasis to work with for those who do not have any. Come and create designs for the home as well as for Rose Shows. Details Elsina 530-620-2200

Rose Pruning Mania!

Due to the overwhelming interest and the
desire to learn at the Mother Lode Rose
Society Pruning Clinic on January 23 at
the Amador Senior Center, the Consulting
Rosarians are offering another Hands on
Pruning seminar at the Amador Senior
Center 229 New York Ranch Road on
February 27th from 10 A.M. to 12 Noon.
As an added incentive, Muriel Humenick,
Master Rosarian will demonstrate how to
care for your tools and how to sharpen
them. This seminar is scheduled to be
held outdoors in the rose garden at the
Senior Center, weather permitting.

The following is a brief review of the ba-
sics of pruning: and why you prune. Prun-
ing controls the size and shape of your
bush. It also stimulates the new and
healthy growth for maximum blooms.

Pruning the roses depends on the vari-
ety. If you want long stems for exhibition
you prune for longer canes. For all prun-
ing you take out the crossing canes and
old wood. Clearing out the center makes
better air circulation and thus prevents a
chance for disease. Prune away all canes
that are smaller than a pencil. These
small canes will not be strong enough to
hold a rose.

How many canes should you leave? If
possible you should leave 3 to 5 new
greener canes.

When making the cut, you should cut just
above the bud eye facing toward to the
outside at approximately a 45 degree an-
gle. If you cut flat it may cause a pooling
of water and may cause a foci for dis-
ease.

Always practice good housekeeping rules by cleaning all dead leaves and debris from
aound the base of your plant and throw in the garbage. DO NOT deposit in your compost pile!

To insure a good demonstration please sharpen your tools ahead of time if possible. Bring a
good pair of gauntlet gloves (preferably goat skin), a pair of loppers, a good saw, a pair of by
pass shears, a can of Lysol spray, band aids and some antiseptic. Always remember to keep
your Tetanus shot current. Why Lysol? The use of Lysol spray is to spray your pruners after
pruning a possible diseased cane such as Crown Gall which is highly infectious.

I am sure after your pruning is done your mind wanders to the new beautiful roses in the nurser-
ies and where to put them. Maybe it is time to .shovel prune. those roses who didn’t perform as
well as you wanted them to last year. Well then, it is time to start .bearing gifts. to someone who
just wants a garden rose just for color. You will then have space for your new variety.

The new varieties are in the nurseries! Use caution before purchasing. Research the rose, pay-
ing special attention to disease resistance, how large does it grow, what zone does it do well in,
how much sun do you have available! Always buy Grade # 1 roses.

Alicia Baylor of Buena Vista Butterfly Farm will be the guest speaker at the Mother Lode Rose Society meeting on March 2 at 1:30 P.M. at the Amador Senior Center @ 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson, Calif. She will give an interesting view on everything you need to raise butterflies. She belongs to the International Butterfly Breeders Association.
